That Time I Bought a Netbook and then Never Really Mentioned It

by Mary on March 10, 2010

I’m sitting online at Paciugo right now, across the street from the Midas where they may or may not be able to check out my check engine light before tomorrow morning, despite the fact that I left work early to get it there by 5 because they told me if I did, they’d have it looked at this evening. But instead of dwelling on the fact that they are morons, I decided that instead I would pull out my trusty netbook and write a blog post! Ya know, since as far as I’m aware, the internet is still broken at my house.

And then it occurred to me, as I noticed the kink in this plan that was my complete lack of an idea for a post, that I never really mentioned the purchase of said netbook on this blog. And that perhaps there are others of you out there considering the purchase of just such a device I might be able offer some insight. Or maybe not, but we’re gonna go with it.

I purchased this Acer Aspire One netbook from Amazon (in blue, because I like to buy things in blue…like my car) back in early December. I did a lot of research and had pretty much narrowed it down to an Acer or an ee. They were the most reasonable, price-wise, and after reading approximately eighty gazillion reviews for netbooks of every brand, they stood out as the most bang for your buck. In fact, a netbook appealed to me over a standard laptop because it was 1) cheaper and 2) easier to tote around. I actually purchased a monitor and external mouse/keyboard as well, so I can plug it in at my desk and it’s like I’m using any old PC. The only thing it’s missing is a CD drive.

I really love it. Admittedly the screen size is sometimes kind of annoying, as not much fits on a page before you need to scroll, but it is well worth the portability in my opinion. I bought a sleeve for it and can stick it in my purse or backpack and barely notice the extra weight. The keyboard is slightly smaller, but I’ve had no problem with that (although I do have tiny hands…). Some of the reviews I read complained about the trackpad, but it doesn’t bother me…I don’t use the “multi-gesture” feature though, so I suppose if that was important to you it might be an issue. I did go ahead and max out the RAM and I already owned an external hard drive, so I only keep what I need to on the actual machine to avoid slowing it down. So far it’s been very durable, enduring constant attention from my cats, who are very jealous of that new thing in my lap, how about they sit there instead?

Overall I’m very pleased. It’s perfect for taking to a coffee shop or a friend’s place to read or write on the fly. Also? It’s super cute (and blue!) and perfectly functional at my desk when that’s a better environment. I think it was well worth the $350 I paid for it.

How about you guys? Do any of you own netbooks? Are you considering purchasing one? What are your thoughts on this new category of laptop?

My Mac is so light and wee that I don’t need one. But if I didn’t have that? In a HEARTBEAT.

Well sure, if I had $1000 just lying around I would have gone with a Mac too :p

Ahh nice!I’ve been thinking about getting one… My laptop broke not too long ago and it seems like the most sensible option for now…I would mostly only use it for blogging anyway…

Exactly. As long as you don’t need a ton of hard drive space or a CD drive, they’re really pretty great!

I got a nice Toshiba laptop on black friday from bestbuy.com for $350. I have a thing for the netbooks since I first saw them. The idea of something that small that I can carry anywhere I want is very appealing to me, but I need something more productive for school and didn’t feel the need to buy both a laptop and a netbook.

By the way – who said country was a bad thing…as long as you’re listening to the right stuff. I am a HUGE Robert Earl Keen fan – I hope you are too. I have tickets to go to his show in Tampa this month – but I have a test the same day…decisions decisions.

Yeah, I had a desktop before so ANY portability was appealing. I like Texas country like Robert Earl Keen as well as the more pop stuff too. The test is during the concert? Seems like you could do both!

My husband’s been bugging me to buy him one, but I won’t. Why? We already have a really nice laptop. We can’t get high-speed internet at our house, so we’re going to purchase an aircard from Verizon. Verizon sells netbooks too, but from what I understand, it’s just a smaller laptop with a built-in aircard. So yeah, we already have the computer part. But perhaps one of these days, like say, if my laptop decides to crap out on me!

I would say that the aircard is probably the cheaper way to go, especially if you still intend to use it mostly at home. If you were going to tote it around all the time, a netbook might be worth the investment if you can afford it.

I keep thinking about getting one, but…I already have a desktop and a laptop and an iPhone, so, yeah, maybe I’m all good with the gadgets. Plus I really want an iMac.

Yeah…I’d say you’re all set. As long as your laptop isn’t god-awful to lug around it would be pretty redundant.

I absolutely LOVE, love, love, LOVE my netbook! I have a laptop as well, but that being a 21 incher widescreen, it’s not that handy to lug around. So I’ve got my wee beastie that I can take with me everywhere and that’s easy enough to hide when I’m at work.. :D

When I went to get my netbook, I’d looked at the possibilities and compared and contrasted till my eyes hurt. Which is why I wasn’t ashamed to go to the guy and say “I want a white netbook”. “Well, we’ve got this” “Is it white?” “Well, no…” “NEXT!” I’ve got enough RAM and HD to last me a lifetime, the only thing I need to do is downgrade to XP (I hate Windows 7. With a passion.)

Haha, always good to know what you want! I use Windows 7 and Office 2007 at work, so while they took some getting used to, it’s much simpler for me not to have to switch back and forth and I’m kind of starting to like it. Don’t tell Microsoft.

I get greedy when it comes to gadgets. I want a netbook. And an iPad. And a MacBook Pro. I think I might have a problem.

Oh man, me too. I always want the latest and greatest of every gadget. It’s not too good on the wallet.
